Hypnopompia
Artist Statement
(Hypnopompic: associated with the semi-consciousness preceding waking. -Merriam Webster)
Hypnopompia: a metaphorical place between states of consciousness, where the landscape is constructed of dreams, memories, and imagination. In this ambiguous state, the conscious mind is called to make order, to justify, to seek ground. The imagery in this body of work is meant to evoke the process of the waking mind, embodying a sense of transience between the disparate elements of ether and earth, light and weight, breath and bone.
The abstract paintings in Hypnopompia are created using a visual language inspired by the structures of biology, geology, and geography. I paint intuitively, creating both visual and physical depth through layers of paint and mixed media. Each piece is built over time, creating a physical history of waxy layers, scraped, incised, burnished, and drawn into. The process of constructing the imagery is revealed through texture, translucent layers, and remaining bits of rejected possibilities that mark the surface.
